Meena – Try Me (Ruf Records)

It’s good to see so many young blues artists surfacing over the last several years and from all corners of the globe.  One of the up and coming female blues singers is Austrian born and raised Meena.  On her new (American release) album, Try Me, Meena belts out blues tunes ranging from the title song, Try Me, a cover of a James Brown tune to a pretty rendition of the Luther Allison penned cut Just as I am.

As a sign of what her fellow artists think of her, blues guitarists Coco Montoya, JoAnne Shaw Taylor, Eric Sardinas, Erja Lyytinen,  and Chris Fillmore all contribute on various cuts on the CD. Send Me a Doctor is great rockin blues with Eric harnessing his guitar skills (he can be a wild man..lol) as a perfect compliment to Meena’s voice and songwriting abilities. I loved her growlin’ vocals and the classic Chicago blues sound of Put Your Hands Out of my Pocket. And as someone born and raised “down the bayou” in New Orleans, I got a kick out of the Cajun influenced Let Your Sweet Love Shine on Me.

Meena will be doing an extensive tour of Germany during September and October.  Give the album a listen and all of you German 60minuten listeners should catch her live performance, you won’t be disappointed. By the way, if you get a chance to see her, let us know what you think by leaving a comment for this review!
