Heritage Blues Orchestra (H.B.O.) – And Still I Rise… I have one thing to say…. OH – MY! MY! How refreshing to find a phenomenal modern band dedicated to traditional blues. This cd is full of why the blues became so popular and just dug into the hearts and souls of Americans and the peoples of the world.

Heritage Blues Orchestra covers Traditional Delta blues, Chicago blues, Spirituals, and African folk songs. I believe it is safe to say this group has the “Goods”. What a nice surprise to find a group full of people that are stars in their own right come together as just people that love the blues. Heritage Blues Orchestra has put together a quality cd that does not fight for attention of one star or another; but there is a genuine melding of talent that is a true work of art.

It difficult for me to pick one favorite off this cd, but if i have to pick 3 of them they would be:

1. Hard Times: This is a great tune hands down.. It showcases 3 of the styles this group has mastered in one song. Starting off with a traditional spiritual that transitions to a brass section highlight reminding me of something Louis Armstrong would smile at, and then once more to a down home blues jam. In one word- Amazing!

2. Don’t Ever Let Nobody Drag You Down: A great classic blues song with an uplifting message so sorely needed in this modern day. I love the brass highlights in this tune and it leaves me wondering why more blues bands do not include a brass section.

3. In the Morning- I found myself clapping and singing with this classic Sunday morning spiritual, reliving my youth and my father’s choir singing this tune.

Yes, Heritage Blues Orchestra “has got the goods” so to speak. I hope and pray this is not a one time production, and i look forward to many more classic blues works of art from this accomplished group. I just want to send out a personal thank you to Heritage Blues Orchestra for sharing your music.
